A driver in Lincoln Park, New Jersey, passed out while driving his car, police say. He was wearing an N95 mask for “several hours,” according to police. The driver crashed head-on into a pole after passing out, police said. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has guidelines for face coverings in public.
Manufacturers of the material have been pushed to produce at unprecedented levels. The industry relies on complex machinery and specialized training that’s part technical and part “art form,” according to some in the industry. The material is used in a variety of industries, including aerospace, defense and medicine.

Lincoln Park police believe the driver wore an N95 mask for several hours. He then passed out behind the wheel due to “insufficient oxygen intake/excessive carbon dioxide intake,” police said. The driver, who was not severely injured, was the only person in the car.
“Please keep on doing what you do so well, which is to lead. You have five masks, what do you do,” Cuomo said. “Do you keep all five? “I have kept four masks for my immediate family,” he added. “Please keep up the good work.
The melt blown layer is the most important part of the mask and the hardest to produce. Many in the melt blown industry are among those considered essential and cleared to report to work each day. When the coronavirus began spreading rapidly in January in China and Taiwan, manufacturers of melt blown material started getting backlogged with their own domestic orders.
Even established companies are having trouble boosting production. “The supply chain has gotten nuts for this particular material,” says Nozi Hamidi, SWM International’s vice president of marketing and business development. Around two dozen domestic manufacturers of melt blown material are in the U.S.
She says you should never reuse a mask after helping with procedures like intubating a COVID-19 patient, even if it’s been sterilized using specialized medical equipment. “We’ve had conversations with hospitals and medical unions that won’t feel comfortable until they’ve got stockpiles,” she says.
I received this letter from a farmer in northeast Kansas. The farmer enclosed the mask with a letter and mailed it to Cuomo. Cuomo read the letter during his nationally-televised daily coronavirus briefing. “I’m a retired farmer hunkered down in northeastKansas with my wife, who has but one lung,” the farmer wrote.
“While we don’t know [the cause] with 100% certainty, we do know that the driver had been wearing an N95 mask inside the vehicle for several hours and ultimately passed out while operating the vehicle,” the department said. Still, “We are not trying to cause public alarm or suggest wearing anN95 mask is unsafe,’ the department added.
Authorities say they have not ruled out another medical reason as a contributing cause to the crash. Police say they did not find any evidence that the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. “We reiterate that police officers are not physicians and do not know the medical history of every person we encounter,” police say.
